CORRESPONDENCE EXPECTATIONS:
Godparents are encouraged to contact their goddaughters monthly by email. The girls
may not go on line more often for the following reasons:
- They have to bus to Coatepeque to access the internet. This is costly for them.
- Electricity is very irregular and there are often days without electricity.
The girls and their families feel very blessed to have godparents who care enough to help them. I go down over the December holidays and encourage godparents to consider coming along for a visit. I will also be down there in June-July with the dental clinic. The girls have a short vacation time in Late June. Should you wish to send photos of yourself and/or your family, I will be happy to take them. This is important to the girls, as it gives them a face to go with you, a very important person in their lives.
NEWS TO SHARE: the new becada emails are of a much superior English quality. Thanks to Edna and new teacher Jackie. I have been amazed at the change in the group. The girls are truly becoming a select club of achievers. They are sisters supporting each other. January volunteers could not differentiate between old timers and the new bacadas.
MADRINA and PADRINO FUN TO SHARE
If you have a special warm fuzzy experience or photos you would like to share, please forward it to Spirit so we can include it on this page. GRADUATIONS
& GRADES We had 3 high school graduates last
November. Glendy, Mariella and Cristina are proud young women, now
attending university while working part time. Their grades are high enough
that we found them part time work, which takes some of the pressure off
the deteriorating family economic situation. It also is a privilege that
they have to study hard to keep. There are three other university
students also working part time.
The overall grades have improved so much this last year. I think much of this is because we have a better program manager, who is on top of things. Edna de Pena is much loved by the girls
and she enjoys working with them. We are grateful for her dedication to Spirit. This has led to a better cohesion within the group. I asked a
one of the becadas which becadas were her friends. Her reply was they were
all her friends, although she did spend more time with a few of them. I have been preaching that they need to become a “club of sisters”, supporting each other. I feel it is happening.
The health of the overall group has improved so much. The girl's motto choice, in October,
2006 was voted on by all and was a combination. “Spirit is our hope, our opportunity and our obligation”, all taken very seriously.
PROGRESS The girls have grown in confidence, vision and dedication. It is a joy to see. We have reason to hope the future will be brighter than the past. We are also growing in the way we do things and making the program better.
Thank you for your support and dedication to these wonderful girls. I will be in Guatemala from
the end of June to Mid August and welcome visits from godparents. See our web page for the dental clinic schedule.
